Dorm Rooms (Residence Halls):

1.) What would you have liked to know about them?

2.) Would you recommend rooming with friend?

3.) If you have a double person room would you want a bunk bed? Or two singles?

4.) Location, which rooms are typically the best? (Corner?)

5.) Is it noisy, or  quiet?

What can you tell us from experience?

(1)     The food is REALLY expensive. Also, when you first move in the food seems really good but after about 2 months it all seems to taste the same and you will spend a lot of money eating out. You think you will get get to know the people on your floor really well and hang out with them, but you will spend a lot more time with the people in your classes.

(2)     It has its ups and downs. I roomed with my best friend. Things were really good at first, but they can also go very bad very quickly. I think there is also something to be said about the "newness" of getting to know a randomly assigned roommate--and it provides a lot more opportunities for meeting new people via friends of friends.

Two singles! Bunk beds are terrible and everyone I know who had one hated them. Imagine you have to bottom bunk and your friend is trying to get some in the top. All around awkwardness.

(4)     I don't know about corners, but freshman year I had a dorm directly above the entrance to the building--as well as a bus stop--and it was miserable.

(5)     Depends on where you are (see #4), who you live with, and how your neighbors are. Also depends on the thickness of the walls (you would be surprised how big of a difference this makes).

(6)     No matter how much you plan, some crazy totally un-plan-for-able shit will come up. Chances are you will get caught drinking in the dorms at least once--roll with it. During finals you will not want to even think about grocery shopping or making food, prepare for it.
